Heather Clawson of Habitually Chic has spent years honing an eye for timeless style. As she parts with a selection of pieces from her wardrobe, she reflects on fashion, travel, and the classics she’ll keep forever.

You have been documenting style for years. How has your eye evolved over time?

I’ve been looking at images every day since I started my original blog in 2007. The cumulative effect has taught me what works and what doesn’t, whether it’s interiors or outfits. I often look back at the auction catalogues of the late Bunny Mellon and Hubert de Givenchy, which continue to train my eye. I don’t think you can truly be stylish by just looking at clothes. You need to visit museums, art galleries, and historic houses, as well as read books and travel for inspiration.

You are parting with a selection of pieces on ReSee. What connects them?

Most of the pieces I’m parting with were purchased on trips after we started traveling again in 2022. I definitely went a little overboard shopping in Paris and London, which is why many of the shoes have never even been worn. For this reason, I’m trying to be more thoughtful about the pieces I buy now.

Is there one piece in this edit that carries a particular memory?

I wanted the Bottega Veneta Lauren 1981 clutch that Lauren Hutton carried in the film American Gigolo ever since I wrote about it on my original blog in 2017. I found one a few years ago, but then I realized that I’m not really someone who’s going to carry a clutch very often.

What makes you decide that a piece no longer belongs in your wardrobe?

If I find myself not using or reaching for a piece for a year or more, it’s time to think about letting it go so someone else can enjoy it.

Another grey day in NYC was brightened up by a visit to the city by my Instagram friend @anamari.jpg

What makes a piece stand the test of time for you?

My favorite pieces in my wardrobe are classics that haven’t changed much since they were first designed. I know I’ll be carrying my vintage Hermès Kelly and Constance bags forever because they will always be in style.

Your world moves between New York and Paris. What does each city give you today?

New York has great energy and business opportunities, but it’s a very casual city, so the fashions I see on the street are usually not very inspiring. Most New Yorkers are wearing workout clothes or leggings, which you would never see on a Parisian woman outside of a gym. I love that there is still a sense of society in Paris and that people dress well as a sign of respect for their friends and neighbors. Style and elegance are ingrained in the French way of life, and I love to sit in a park or at a café and observe them. It’s amazing how a scarf can elevate a simple outfit and how even children can tie one with panache.
